Pet dogs reduce risk of asthma in kids, friendship proved again?

Asthma-inhalerIf you are asthmatic and love dogs, this could be the best news you’ve heard today. Young kids with a pet dog are less likely to develop asthma, new study claims.

In the study, a total of more than one million children were included, and two dog ownership registers.

Researcher Tove Fall of the Uppsala University said that their results confirmed the farming effect, and they also saw that children who grew up with dogs had about 15 percent less asthma than children without dogs.

Asthmatic? Walk, cycle, do yoga for 30 minutes every day

If you are asthmatic, this could well be the best news you’ve h eard in a long time. Latest research suggests that just half-an-hour of exercise daily can help you relieve the symptoms of asthma.

In the study, experts from Concordia University, the Hopital du Sacre-Coeur de Montreal and several other institutions analysed the exercise habits of 643 participants who had been diagnosed with the respiratory disease.

Results were overwhelmingly clear: Those who engaged in optimal levels of physical activity on a regular basis were nearly two-and-a-half times more likely to have good control of their symptoms, compared with those who did no exercise.

The workout doesn’t have to be strenuous. Lead author Simon Bacon said that just 30 minutes a day of walking, riding a bike, doing yoga or anything active, really can result in significant reduction of asthma symptoms.

“The issue of exercise-induced bronchospasm is real — but if you use your releaver medication, blue puffer, before you exercise, and then take the time to cool down afterwards, you should be okay,” he says. “Even if you have asthma, there’s no good reason not to get out there and exercise.”

Bacon concluded that it would be great to see physicians recommending physical activity to patients with asthma, alongside traditional pharmacological treatments.

The study is published in BMJ Open Respiratory Research.

josie-and-yukiFall said that because they had access to such a large and detailed data set, they could account for confounding factors such as asthma in parents, area of residence and socioeconomic status.

In Sweden, dog ownership registration is mandatory in Sweden since 2001. These scientists studied whether having a parent registered as a dog-owner or animal farmer was associated with later diagnosis or medication for childhood asthma.

Senior author Catarina Almqvist Malmros of the Karolinska Institute said that their results also indicated that children who grow up with dogs have reduced risks of asthma later in life.

Malmros said their results were generalisable to the Swedish population, and probably also to other European populations with similar culture regarding pet ownership and farming.

The study is published in the Journal JAMA Pediatrics.

Overweight? Include lots of Vitamin E in your diet

Chronic deficiency in vitamin E could be associated with metabolic syndrome, including heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease and Cancer

A recent study suggests that obese people need to include diet rich in Vitamin E as they require more than normal levels of the Vitamin but get less of it.

While their weight and other problems cause increased oxidative stress, those same problems actually reduce their effective use of vitamin E, the study pointed out.

This vitamin is found at highest levels in some foods such as nuts, seeds, and olive oil.

Chronic deficiency in vitamin E could compound the wide range of diseases known to be associated with metabolic syndrome, including heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease and cancer, the study pointed out.

Hello healthy bones: Study reveals more reasons to take your vitamin E

Some of the findings of this study are counterintuitive, the researchers said, because vitamin E is a fat soluble micronutrient and, in theory, should be available at increased levels in people who are overweight and eat large amounts of fatty foods.

However, the study found that even though circulating vitamin E in the bloodstream may be high, in obese people this essential micronutrient is not finding its way into tissues where it is most needed.

“Vitamin E is associated with lipids, or the fats found in the blood, but it is mostly just a micronutrient that’s going along for the ride,” said one of the researchers Maret Traber from Oregon State University in the US.

“What we found was that tissues of obese people are rejecting intake of some of these lipids because they already have enough fat,” Traber said.

“In the process they also reject the associated vitamin E,” Traber explained.

Time to quit? Your job could be pushing you towards obesity

In this study, the researchers made their findings with a double-blind study of adults, some of whom were healthy and others with metabolic syndrome.

The authors concluded that its findings support higher dietary requirements of vitamin E for adults with metabolic syndrome.

The findings appeared in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Ladies, have you ditched beauty facials for medical ones yet?

With November, the celebratory season of festivals and weddings has officially started. As people attend several functions during this phase, they want to look and feel their best. And, when it comes to beauty treatments, a rejuvenating facial has been the norm.

Medical facials, also known as photofacials, are specifically recommended for skin issues such as dryness, pigmentation and acne

However, of late, many people have been going the extra mile, as they have ditched beauty facials for medical ones. “Medical facials, also known as photofacials, are specifically recommended for skin issues such as dryness, pigmentation and acne,” says Dr Ruby Tandon, celebrity dermatological surgeon, AfterGlow.

Speaking about this trend, Anurag Kedia, director, Four Fountains De-Stress Spa, says, “The trend in facials is moving away from all-purpose facials to problem-solving facials, which have more visible results. Guests often come to our spas and clinics looking for facials that will solve their specific problem.”

However Dr Harshna Bijlani, co-founder and medical head of The Ageless Clinic, feels you should be careful about who you approach for such treatments. She says, “Medi-facials, at times, involve the use of chemical peels (a process in which a chemical is used to peel off a layer of the skin, so that new skin can replace it).

The facials can also use lasers and IPL (intense pulsed light), microdermabrasion, etc. So, it is important to go to a doctor’s clinic to get a medi-facial.” She adds that, in India, there are no qualifications required for therapists to conduct such procedures. “Most of them have been trained on the job. So, it is important to select a reputed clinic, as they will be stringent in the selection of their therapists,” she says.

Beauty vs medical facials

“Beauty facials are all-purpose facials, whereas, medical facials are customised to treat specific problems, to deliver clear, functional benefits,” says Dr Sandesh Bhosale, manager services, NuAyurveda Clinic.

Medical facials use high-quality, non-irritant customised products that contain active ingredients. These treatments can be done on any body part that has problematic skin. For example, if someone has dark elbows or knees, they may go in for a lightening treatment.

The centres that offer such facials are equipped with doctors, skilled manpower, and infrastructure.

Myths about medical facials

They are painful

Not necessarily. Usually, the concentration of the peels used is quite mild, and the clean-up process, while not painless, is quite bearable

They are expensive

Basic medical facials are usually not expensive. It depends on the clinic, and what products or technologies the doctors or specialists use

It is only for people above the age of 30

Acne is a major concern among teenagers, and so, people who are 15 and above are prime candidates for such treatments. Hence, 15 is the minimum age for medical facials.

Certain kinds of medical facials may have side effects. They can result in minor swellings, redness and increased translucence (when nerves are visible). In extreme cases, they can cause blistering, bleeding and pigmentation as well. Those who have extremely sensitive skin, keloids and lesions, or are pregnant, must not opt for these facials. Share your complete medical history with your skin specialist before choosing any such facial.
